2007 Oceania Track Championships

Thursday 23/11/2006 - 4000m Individual Pursuit. I did a 4.54.66 (5 second P.B.) on a 95.4 using a front shamal and rear disc (using Gunsle's 53 chainring, thanks dude!). Gear felt good. The Malaysian caught me with about 4 laps to go just as I was about to start driving it home and I had to sit back a bit and not draft him (and I don't think you are allowed to re-overtake). He got in my way a bit when he finished (he didn't swing straight up the track so I had to back off a bit to avoid hitting him). I was riding to a 4.52 schedule and got close and I'm happy with my ride. Note: The Malaysian did a 4.45 which was the fastest ride ever by a Malaysian (he had the National record for about 10 minutes until his mate did a 4.43). I did the 1st 1km in 1.15.63, 2nd km in 1.14.28, 3rd km in 1.13.12, 4th km in 1.11.63. (9th overall).

Sunday 26/11/2006 - 15km Scratch Race. 60 lap race won by Greg Henderson (2004 World Scratch Race Champion). I stayed with the leaders for 26 laps (34 to go). Other riders were dropped after 10 or 15 laps. The race averaged over 50km/h. I rode a 95.4 which was fine (but the pace wasn't fine). 16 starters, 8 finishers. I went home for 3 hours.

5pm session - 1km Time Trial. After being held up on the Springvale Rd "Car Park" I got to the track at 4:55pm (too late to warm up on the track). I changed into skinsuit, pumped up singles, set up rollers, then looked at start time. My name had been left off the Kilo start list (due to start in less than 30 mins). I found some officials who said they would look into it then I jumped on the rollers on my 95.4. Less than 5 minutes later an official came and told me that I'd accidentally been left of the list and that unfortunately I'd have to ride off first (2 on the track at a time). I said "no worries" and thought I could continue my warm up. She then said "You're on next and you need to have your bike and helmet checked before you race". I got checked then got in the starting gate. Did a P.B. of 1.10.951 (old P.B. 1.11.1) which I'm happy enough with but I know I can go faster if I train for it or have a warm up . (9th overall).

30km Points Race (120 laps with a sprint every 10 laps). This race was fast. 1st rider dropped before the first sprint then another rider dropped during the first sprint then another rider dropped soon after. The only riders left on the track were Australian National Team (3), New Zealand National Team (3), Malaysian National Team (4), and me (Le Tour Cycles blue skinsuit). I got a 3rd place (2 points) in the 4th sprint and stayed with the leaders for 50 laps (70 laps to go). Only 11 of us were left in the race. I then dropped a lap and jumped back in the bunch for another 10 laps or so (half the race) then I pulled out (I was rooted). I was happy enough with my effort and the 93.6 gear but reckon I would have done much better with 170mm cranks (instead of 175). 9 finished.

TheKillerAnt - Yarra Valley Tour

TheKillerAnt - Do my eyes deceive me??
I'm trying to work out how when Steve sits-on for nearly 40kms in a 4 man chase group, refusing to work etc. the only photo of the group shows him 'appearing' to work a turn?

I will contact AR and Wevans and see if they can explain this phenomenon.

If that fails ill have to ask Mr DeGama how his software program can perform these miracles.

Fascinating.

Timmy's D'oh Crash.

AhhhhhhhGGGGGGGGG! That was what I meant to say when I came to after my crash!
Well if you haven't heard by now I came a cropper in Friday nights C-grade Crit.
I was racing quite well during the race, but there were a lot of younger "green" riders who probably hadn't had a lot of experience at open racing or any kind of racing. Halfway through the race I heard someone fall behind me on the bend where I went down, the familiar sound of pedal scraping, then bike/body sliding. I was second wheel when this one happened, and the guy in front keep looking around "rubber necking". I was yelling "He's gone mate, he's gone, don't worry", to make him keep riding and try and get away. And he did keep riding for a bit, but we didn't get away. After 40 mins of racing, we had 3 to go and the field was all together. At bell lap I had worked my way up to between 6th and 8th, was still moving forwards and we were flying. We entered the slightly downhill off camber back corner at around 50 k's. All I could do was stretch out on the bike with the knee a bit out for stability and hold on through the corner. Then as we exited the bend it happened. Some young buck who had only ridden 3 crits before was right on the front and decided to pedal while turning at that speed. He crunched his pedal, and decked it. He flew off onto the nature strip, but his bike slid right infront of the fast moving bunch. The guy on my left dodged it, but I hit the bike square in the middle, about where the cranks are. I thought happy thoughts, and held my breath and tried to jump the bike but all I remember was seeing my handle bars disappearing under me, and Timmy was in launch mode.
All I remember after that was..... well it took me ages to piece everything together. I could hear this person hypervelating (which was me) but it didn't feel like me and the first person I recognized was Ben Horton who had me propped up. I then saw Monster looking at me as though someone had died, and I don't remember a lot of other stuff besides the ambos putting a collar on me, and getting moved onto a stretcher. But thankyou to every one who helped out on the scene getting my stuff home and the phone calls after. At least I was not too bad in the end!! I ended up with a Frankenstein Head, really sore back/guts, and skin off shoulder arm but thats was you get when you do a one and a half somersault and use your head/face as a break at 50kph... Time to rest now (I got a week off) and see if I can ride Bright.

TheKillerAnt - King of the Mountain (Mt William)

View from summit of Mt William

TheKillerAnt WINS the 2006 Mount M*ther F*cking William Road Open Classic..in style, sort of :)

Think open road race pain, add altitude as shown and its obvious isnt it, this Mt William classic is a hard mans race.

I don't really know what to say in regards to my big win, it took a really big gamble, a lot of courage, and lots of hard work training for the last 5 months to get me to the 1170metre summit first!!

The Race: The first 50kms to Mt Difficulty was very fast, sometimes single file but it was'nt too taxing, it was a good warm up for the 15km climb up Mt Difficulty and myself and CW smashed the race to pieces as the climb began. By the summit we had only ourselves and 3 others remaining, on the descent 1 guy caught us, making 6. The descent was hairy, we dropped our follow car completely, used both sides of the road etc.

The Real Race: Mt William was something i had never seen before, and at that stage i didnt know its the highest mountain in the grampians. Roughly 2kms into the final 12km climb i felt quite good, and more than ready to twist the trottle a touch, with 10kms of Mt Willliam to go, i up'd the tempo and no-one came with me, i didnt attack as such, i just lifted the pace by about 3-4 km/h. The next 4-5 kms was great, i got right out of sight, really climbing fast, seemed like i was double speeding the B-graders i was passing, but the 3kms or so leading to the 2km kite (and carpark) i gave it everything i had...when i got to the 2km to go kite (seriously Tour De France style blow up kite, over the road) i had not much left in the legs, they were heavy, sore, and cramping would not be far away.

Hell on a bike: If you have ridden, walked or driven the final 2kms of goat track (single car width, crap, loose-ish surface) i really dont need to tell you anything about the agony we were all in store for. With basically a perfect bike, a fit and lean me, a 12-27 cassette and all the guts i could muster, facing off against something steeper than the first 600metres of Terry's Ave that lasts for 2kms, at an altitude over 1 km above sea level is just insane. (its 22%, terry's is 'only' 20%) I just kept on digging into some reserves i didnt know i had, mental toughness at its best :)

Just: To cut a long story short, i hung on for a win of 15 seconds, losing minutes and minutes in the final 2kms. I judged my move perfectly in terms of taking home the win. Of course i could have waited much later in the climb but im a gutsy rider and regret nothing. With some luck, lots of hard work and great advice from Gunsle over the years, i had my first open road race victory..and a smile to match.

The wash-up: I was so over-tired from my effort i only managed another 4hrs sleep that night. The next day i was tight, sore and my lungs felt like they were 50% of what they were. Another day later and i still felt the same, but i got out and trained and did a gym session too. Today i did a full session of f8ck off SE's and the body wasn't too retarded, thankfully.

Whats now? Just keep getting experience i guess, training hard, look forward to watching monster win either the overall or at least a few stages of the ToB. He's one strong and super fit fella, i have FULL respect for his racing ability. Strong, Fit, Climbs & Sprints awesome, TT's okay..My prediction Monster wins ToB overall or at least a few stages :)

Looking 4ward 2 cing the new hizzle at mt beautiful t9e0!

Gunsle owns BBN 60th polo shirt!

Gunsle can be seen here in his shiny new red Blackburn Cycling Club 1946-2006 Limited Edition polo shirt. I believe this is a genuine photograph and has not been doctored in any way.

These next 2 photos are of twin brothers who work with me.

Peacock spreads it's wings!

On Saturday 11th November, The Killer Ant (Le Tour Cycles) won his first Open road race. Riding his machine that weighed just a whisker over 6.8kgs (including bidon cages) he powered to a well earned solo victory in the C Grade division of the Provincial Victoria Pinnacle Cycling Series Event 1, Grampians - Mt William Road Classic.

Peacock finished 15 seconds ahead of Shepparton's Michael Hill and a full 90 seconds ahead of Cam Winton. Ant's next major goal is most likely a top result in the Tour of Bright (B grade) in 3 weeks time, and I'm sure he'll be looking for a top finish in the Buffalo stage (Stage 3). Well done Ant!
