In form local rider Vaughan Bowman made his first appearance at the 2.2km Casey Fields circuit on Sunday morning and took the win in a commanding fashion. After a few futile breakaway attempts by other riders early in the A/B grade race, Vaughan found himself off the front on his own and steadily increased his lead all the way to the finish. This is a remarkable effort considering he has been sick with a cold or flu since completing Tatts Cup number 1 last week. A small chase group of the remaining A grade riders (Matt C., Cam W., and Steve M.) refused to work well together and constantly attacked each other. At one point Matt attacked and got a fair gap on Steve and Cam (who exchanged words with each other) before bringing him back. All B grade riders were blown out the back somewhere.
The conditions were dry but very windy, and Vaughan demonstrated that he was in a class of his own with his superior strength, taking a well deserved victory. Matt and Steve dropped Cam in the closing laps and sprinted for 2nd place (first loser). Steve got around the last corner in front and went frigin BANG!!.....and nearly frigin CRASHED!! His bloody chain came off and he nearly flew over the handlebars. He hit both knees very hard but managed to stay upright and roll through for third. (Please note that his bike mechanic was not to blame, it was just one of those things. Steve had jumped hard several times during the race without a problem. Maybe he was trying to sprint in a stupid gear like 53-21 or something - Idiot).
Numbers were down due to a clash with the Bay 2 Bay Crashic being held at the same time as the BBN hosted Casey Fields. Unfortunately The Killer Ant met with road and wrecked some Le Tour clothing, but not his Orca or Zipps!
Brief Results - 1st Vaughan Bowman
